Scary dream

This is going to take a while. I went to bed at 1 a.m. not very tired. I woke up in a darkened apartment and immediately recognized that it wasn't my home. I told myself that I was in a dream and that I was simply going to force myself awake, but nothing. I started to touch and pinch my arm and was immediately shocked by the sensation, which felt so real. I insisted and seeing my failure I started to panic very badly. I threw myself against a piece of furniture and a wall but still nothing.

I turned on the light and a young man in his twenties began to comfort me. He touched my back and I felt his fingers on my back, telling me that everything was going to be all right and that I shouldn't panic. It worked and he told me he had to turn off the light because I was disturbing the others. In fact, several people were sleeping on mattresses in this lounge, so I figured an after-party had taken place here. The light went out and I started to panic again, because I really felt like I'd woken up in someone else's body. I turned the light back on and started to hear people complaining, and then it went out again. I tried to turn it back on but none of the switches worked. I couldn't find the person who had helped me, and even my panicked reflections weren't making anyone react.

I then made my way out of the room, stepping on sleepers' feet, towards a kitchen. That's when a girl came out of one of the rooms and walked right through me like a ghost, I felt like I was turning into some kind of smoke. I panicked again, thinking I was probably dead and that I was haunting these people.

That's when I came back to the real world, but I didn't really notice because everything was dark. I really had the impression that I'd returned to my body without any transition. I realized this when I apprehensively opened my eyes, not wanting to see anywhere other than my room. My left arm felt very strangely numb as I slept on my other arm, on my side. I realized that I had only slept for an hour, and I was shocked by this strange awakening, with no transitions, no sensations different from my dream. It was the only time in my life that I realized I was probably dreaming and couldn't wake up.

I'm usually a spectator of my dreams and I can't make decisions and apply them. In short, I'd like to know if this kind of dream is commonplace for other people. Should I be worried?

This could be sleep paralysis. Thats when you half wake up and you simply cannot do anything. Its very scary. THe frustrations and scary feelings are just a dream story which captures your fears at the time. Did you feel a real sense of paralysis.

I didn't feel like I was falling asleep or waking up, so you must be right about that. I still find it strange to have had an experience similar to a dream. Being the first time in 28 years that it's happened to me, I'm rather distraught. Thanks for your reply.
