I recently came across a very clear dream from a Chinese dream group (shared with permission, anonymized).
**The dream:**
A man walked past the dreamer's house. The house looked different from real life. The man seemed to know something — or maybe he was pretending.
He asked a neighbor to bring a bucket of water. The water was slightly cloudy. He said it was not good.
Then he asked the dreamer to bring a bucket from the dreamer's own water tank. The water was crystal clear. He said to scoop out the thin layer of alkali on top. The dreamer did it. The man said, "now it's good."
As the man was about to leave, the dreamer noticed a hidden hole in the ground where the man had left money — about 15,000 yuan plus some foreign currency. The dreamer picked it up and returned it. The man was grateful. The dreamer admitted: "I thought about keeping some of the foreign money, but I gave it all back. Afterward, I thought — if I hadn't returned it, it would all be mine."
Later, the man appeared again. He was in debt. He tried to have dinner with old colleagues, but even the restaurant booking was restricted.
There was also a part the dreamer couldn't fully recall — something about the man recognizing two rare plants (medicinal herbs) in the dreamer's yard.
**My analysis:**
This dream is not about water or money. It's about a moral moment — a quiet test of character.
**1. The two buckets of water**
Neighbor's water: cloudy → represents someone else's messy situation.
Dreamer's water: clear but with a thin layer of alkali on top → the dreamer's own life is generally clear, but there's a small, long-ignored issue (the alkali layer). Scooping it out fixes it. The dreamer is capable of self-correction.
**2. The hidden money (15,000 yuan + foreign currency)**
Money in dreams often represents value, opportunity, or something desirable. Foreign currency means something unfamiliar, a different set of rules. The dreamer finds it by accident. No one sees. No one would know if he kept it.
He returns it anyway. But then he thinks: "if I hadn't, it would be mine."
That thought — not the act of returning — is the most honest part of the dream. It shows he wanted to keep it. He chose not to. That's what makes it a real moral choice, not just automatic honesty.
**3. The man later: in debt, restricted**
The dreamer returned the money, but the man still ended up broke. The money wouldn't have saved him. So the dreamer's choice wasn't about changing the man's fate — it was about keeping his own integrity.
**4. The rare plants / medicinal herbs**
Plants are living things. Rare herbs represent something valuable that the dreamer possesses but may not fully recognize — perhaps kindness, integrity, or a unique personal quality.
**Open question for discussion:**
What do you think the "foreign currency" represents? A different set of values? An unfamiliar temptation?
I'd love to hear your thoughts. If you'd like a full written analysis of your own dream, feel free to DM me.
