Over time, in our responses to people and situations, we build up a body of knowledge that can help us to make fruitful judgments and decisions in the present. Yet we always need to regard the wisdom of the past as a reservoir rather than as a set of prescriptive rules. Lessons learned from the past are valuable only if they are applied to the present with sensitivity, flexibility, and grace. It is important that we seek to apply the past, not attempt to recreate it.
