Dream Time

I’ve two non-lucid dreams of late to report. In the first dream I was travelling in a bus in Ukraine. I thought to myself how they don’t have many fighter jets and so I needn’t train to be a fighter pilot. Perhaps the dream was a critique of my procrastination in helping Ukrainian refugees. For the second dream I was in the back of a police car when the policeman had to start the sirens and chase another car. The police car was behind the criminal vehicle for a long time before the police car managed to get in front and block the narrow road. I got out my phone to record the policeman arrest the driver. One interesting aspect of the dream is that my phone was slow to start up just as it is in real life. Maybe this was to prevent me becoming lucid in the dream. The dream also made me think of my gun control debates in how the police car struggled to get ahead of the criminal’s car. Maybe the police would have to ram their car against the criminal’s car like a weapon if they can’t get more police vehicles to block the road. That dream also made me weigh up the differences between blogging like I’m doing now and crime-scene journalism. The lack of stress in the dream made me suspect that once I get a job my worries of past educational failures will disappear. Or if I combined both dreams then I could be a war correspondent in Ukraine!

In this morning’s dreams I was at a cheap hostel and navigated my way through a maze of staircases and hallways to lavish sitting rooms hidden on the top floors. Hidden rooms are a recurring theme in my dreams that might relate to how different my life would feel if I were from a different wealth class. A subsequent dream was where I was travelling to a posh hotel in Turkey where I did a tennis tournament in real life. Although this time in the dream I’d be attending a maths lecture. I felt really serious in the dream where the unfair pride of extreme wealth can be a reminder to focus harder even if the study format is the same. The dilemma is that wealthy people can be very humble and self-controlled about everything except for their wealth. This is why competing against wealthy people could be very difficult as a poorer person without coming across as arrogant.

Soon after I fell asleep last night I became lucid of a steep snowy mountain. The ambiguous scale of the slope made me worry. I said a prayer for anyone that might have been stranded there. In the past I rarely prayed for others when I said formal prayers to God. So perhaps the momentary lucidity was intended to make me more hopeful of other people in need. During dawn my dreams were purely random. I ate a snickers ice-cream and said to myself how it’d improve my nut-intake as if to poke fun at my day-time rationalisations. I was also on-board a ferry where I was sharing a room with puppets of famous actors. Who knows if the dream was distancing me from celebrities when we don’t know them personally. That is to say we only know them from TV. When I awoke I was no longer stressed from having analysed difficult personal relationships before I had went to bed. People in the ancient world dreamt as do criminals in today’s world. Hence sleep doesn’t necessarily prevent violence. Yet even if we choose violence we’ll inevitably be defeated by people who are more violent than us. Hence the absurdity of dreams can caution against taking violence seriously for good reasons or for bad.

Whatever about an afterlife the mind disappears at the same time the body dies. This limits the time travel potential of sleep where your mind could only be projected forwards in time. Otherwise if the body died during the day then your body wouldn’t be able to sleep that night to project your mind backwards in time.

When we think of a memory in the past our focus on the present moment dissipates. So when we exaggerate the trend our mind can be fully in the past without being in the present moment. Yet our body is constantly moving forward in time. As such if our mind is in the past then our body’s progression to the physical future will accelerate. As such backward mental time travel is compatible with forward physical time travel. This is an intuitive version of my theory of dreaming as a temporal encryption. I might have to do a few promiscuous human experiments to prove my theory for a Nobel prize!

I don’t want to bore everyone with my non-lucid dreams everyday. Yet I might need to give a temporary overview of my non-lucid dreams so that readers can infer the dream analysis required to eventually become lucid. As I lay down last night my thoughts drifted to Willem Dafoe and his false charm in his green goblin role in Spider-Man. My thoughts must have become even more tangential before falling asleep. The first dream I can remember was a re-enactment of my failed physics interview at Cambridge University when I was 17. Yet this time I was applying for year-long master’s degree as a chef. They asked me whether Ireland was an academic country. I replied that Ireland was a slightly academic country but that it was really the Mediterranean countries that were very academic as Catholics. Perhaps these lines were the dream’s way of undermining casually racist accusations. The dream ended with the interviewers using metal prongs to stab those whose applications were rejected. I managed to throw a blunt object at them from behind their backs. This ending might have been an allusion to my self-defence theories where we can also be ambushed with projectiles in gun control zones. For the last dream I was with my father who had informed me that he had a heart bypass. That was a very simple fictional story that illustrates the potential of dreams to alter our real-life decision-making to appreciate our older relatives.

For last night’s dream I was in Ukraine and trying to fend off a Russian advance in the countryside. Whenever I aimed my sniper rifle and squeezed the trigger I fired an empty round. I then had to dodge the enemies’ fire and re-aim only to shoot more blanks. This dream relates to threat rehearsal. In real life I target practiced with a bolt action rifle at a range but often lost count of the number of bullets I had fired. As such I’d try to shoot even when the magazine was exhausted. This might have been where the dream acquired the information. The dream was more adrenalised than the safe shots of airsoft and quasar because I sincerely believed I was going in for the kill each time. A blank round resembled a missed shot from a real round where my reflexes were tested. The bullets I put into the dreamy magazine might be misshapen for the type of gun being used. Or perhaps I’d try to fire a bullet without the cartridge. Hence a dream can recreate a more extreme combat experience through mini-delusions. For example very rarely in real life I might walk faster on the footpath as if the strangers behind me were a threat. Although I knew the strangers were safe and merely used an imaginary placebo thought-line to walk faster. At the end of the dream I looked to the horizon and saw skyscrapers of a city like Doha in Qatar. This is very far from Ukraine where I visited Doha years ago. Yet Ukraine is still closer than Ireland to Qatar where the imagery might have been a hyperbolic reminder to consider the different climate in Ukraine if I ever head over there.

One way for a materialist to interpret a lucid dreamer is if an immigrant had a different worldview to the new country and had no social connection to their home country. That way your unconscious mind would be exposed to an entire nation ignoring your perception where your metaphysics had to be resolute. Lucid dreaming would resemble a form of natural evil demanding your spiritual independence from a collective population.

I’ve been doing car driving lessons with my father and lo and behold there was a dream where I was a pilot flying a plane. I was using levers that moved in the inverse direction to the plane. I actually forgot I was meant to lift-off on the runway until the very last section before rising nearly vertically upwards. The dream emphasises the simplicity of steering a car seeing as I won’t be a plane pilot anytime soon.

Maybe to lucid dream you’d have to convert to evil before sleep and repent in the morning! Being able to forgive yourself is important if you’re the only victim! Forgiveness is a paradoxical virtue of tolerating bad people that the unconscious mind might try and improve during dreaming.

I was re-reading my blog in a dream. I noticed that paragraphs were missing and random words were added to my piece. I concluded that there was a computer virus causing my blog to be jumbled. This rationalisation prevented me becoming conscious.

The creepiness of the uncanny valley might relate to the problem of evil. What if God compelled everyone to love you? Maybe lookalike robots could be deterministically programmed to always be nice in an insincere way. By contrast humans have the capacity to be evil in way that makes any kind gestures more sincere. So maybe communism might struggle with a small uncanny valley effect if we compelled everyone to be patriotic.

Leaving the small bedside lamp on during sleep is a cheaper alternative to specialist lucid dreaming laser goggles. A partial light source allows you to become gradually desensitised to the dark where you might have more energy to deal with lucid dreams. By contrast turning all lights off is like plunging straight into the deep end where you might be too tired to focus on dreaming.

One way to prove lucid dreaming is that were we fully unconscious during sleep then we’d have to be reincarnated each morning. Yet reincarnation is even more extreme of a concept than lucid dreaming! Last night I’d a dream that I was driving a car into a parking space where my leg froze. I’d to tell my father to switch places before it crashed. Maybe the dream was a reminder that in emergencies I can also use my left leg for the break even though the right leg is recommended.

A value of lucid nightmares to amoral or prehistoric people is that it compels you to understand a more evil mindset in order to deter you being overconfident in a confrontation. A lucid nightmare can tell you how easy it’d be for another person to be even more solipsistic than you. If people viewed evil as strength then they might not realise that anyone who assumed a more intensely evil mindset from a younger age could not be matched for violence. Likewise it’s in an evil person’s interest to not pick on people more evil than them when hierarchy has been easily enforced in ancient history.

Adults all have unique physiques and mindsets. As such there’s no limit to sexual symbolism when both desire and self-control can be unlimited. Just imagine if there were “no holes barred” in the physical world where any single perversion could mimic devotion in a religion like the killing of adulterers in ancient Islamic societies. As such there was actually no knowing what would happen to a collective psyche if paedophilia or homosexuality had been the norm for millennia. Lucid dreaming isn’t necessarily sexual but might be the only comparable phenomenon for those who’ve never lucid dreamed when it comes to believing others who lucid dream. People who opt to put a wedding ring on their own finger with immoral sexual thoughts will see their unconscious mind rebel against them. Even God Himself could rebel with ghosts if no children are being born despite endless sexuality!

The way children can dream means that the way the brain encrypts dreams doesn’t have to be complicated. For example if dreaming was like an assembly language to convert thoughts into movements of the body then even the most simple words like “go” or “stop” would suffice to move our body! The mind-body problem overlooks the large number of verbs in a language! Incidentally I’d a dream in which I was asleep with a baby where I was ruling out theories of sleep where I formed my idea above about the simplicity of a child’s sleep.

An example of a working backwards heuristic is that if you've solved one problem but are still stuck on a second problem then it implies that the second problem is somehow more complicated than the first problem even if the two problems are unrelated. For example sometimes I struggle to understand how I failed my leaving cert exams even though I've been able to write a full thesis on gun control. This implies that interpreting my failed exams is actually more mysterious than a collective self-defence policy. As such my subconscious knows that I'm not fully consistent with my analytical skills. This is why your unconscious mind can use lucid dreams to reconcile your awareness on one issue to another.
